Phosphorus: A Holistic Approach to Corrosion Control

Managing corrosion, scale, and microbial growth requires drinking water operators to balance interconnected treatment goals. Addressing one water quality concern in isolation can create unintended consequences elsewhere in the system. This course explores the relationships among corrosion control, metal release, disinfectant demand, and overall water quality. Participants will examine established treatment approaches, including pH and alkalinity adjustment and phosphate-based inhibitors, with attention to how water chemistry and existing pipe deposits influence performance. The course also distinguishes effective corrosion control from the assumption that calcium carbonate scale alone provides reliable protection against lead and copper release.

The course then examines iron corrosion and its implications for red water, disinfectant residuals, and chemical use. It introduces SeaQuest as an alternative treatment approach and examines reported applications aimed at reducing iron corrosion, keeping residual iron in solution, and maintaining disinfectant residuals while using less phosphorus. Emphasis is placed on evaluating these outcomes together, rather than optimizing individual parameters in isolation, to help operators assess treatment strategies that support corrosion control and broader water quality objectives.

Class will be held In-Person. To allow for adequate training time for each participant, we will be watching registrations closely and begin a Wait List, if needed. Registration is on a first come first served basis.
