Meeting Facility Needs to Address Nitrogen in the CT River Basin (#2021-09)


This session will focus specifically on communities in the CT River Basin to assess and improve strategies for optimizing total nitrogen (TN) removal and meeting new or existing nutrient removal permit limits for Wastewater Treatment Facilities. During this session the following will be discussed:

- Introductions
- Status of NPDES permits
- Challenges associated with nutrient removal
- Total nitrogen removal 101
- Strategies to optimize plant operations
- Available nitrogen removal technologies
- Innovative nitrogen removal technologies
- CWMP or facilities planning
- Funding opportunities

Class will be held Virtually on the Zoom platform. All participants will need access to a computer, tablet, or smartphone that has Zoom videoconferencing software installed, and a good internet connection. If you don’t yet have Zoom, you can sign up and download here.

Instructors:

Doug Hankins, PE, Wastewater Technical Leader at Wright-Pierce
Doug has extensive experience in a wide variety of wastewater processes including secondary treatment systems, and innovative/alternative treatment solutions. Moreover, he is an expert in biological nutrient removal (nitrogen and phosphorus), filamentous bacterial control processes, aeration systems, and process enhancements for reduced sludge production. He has extensive process modeling experience as well as operational knowledge having provided multiple on-call operational support roles for municipalities.

Kevin Olson, PE, Project Manager and Massachuesetts Wastewater Practice Group Leader at Wright-Pierce
Kevin has 34 years of experience on a variety of water and water pollution control projects. As Massachusetts Wastewater Practice Group Leader, he is responsible for overseeing all wastewater related projects and initatives in the state. As project manager, he is responsible for the design and construction of gravity sewers, wastewater pumping stations, force mains, low pressure sewers, wastewater treatment facilitites, water mains, water pump stations, and odor control systems for wastewater pump stations and treatment facilities. He has in-depth Massachusetts wastewater system expertise having completed dozens of wastewater treatment facilities projects, comprehensive wastewater management plans, and various other types of wastewater projects.

Dave Gaipo, Client Service Manager at Wright-Pierce
Dave has over 24 years of experience operating and managing water and wastewater treatment facilities including 22 years of progressive experience in water and wastewater technical program development and administration. He has expertise in assessment, re-engineering, and execution of process control programs. He is seasoned in implementing start-up plans and optimizing operations across all facility systems performance areas including sophisticated collection, treatment, and discharge systems.
