Theory of Pipe & Cable Locating, Dig Safe Rules & Regulations, & Basics of Leak Detection (#2023-28, 29, 30)


In this 4-hour workshop, we will be discussing how a pipe & cable locator works. We will reivew types of locators, what frequencies work better for different applications, as well as different ways to apply the signal. We will disucss ways to detect distorted signals and how we can try to prevent bleeding off. We will look at basic corrective steps and ways to locate non-conductive pipes. We will then discuss Dig Safe Rules & Regulations in Massachusetts, where we will review damage prevention laws and rules for both facility operators and excavators, pre-marking techniques for proposed excavation sites and Dig Safe notification procedures, and methods for working safely around underground utilities. We will also disucss safety protocols if an uderground facility is damaged, enforcement, and close with potential hazards of utility damage and lessons learned. Then, we will wrap up our class by going over basic leak detection. Different methods to find leaks, and are you preventative or reactive to leaks in your town.

Class will be held In-Person. Feel free to bring your own equipement to class for any quesitons or issues you may have.

Instructors:
Michael Berthod, Utilitronics
Mr. Berthod has worked with Utilitronics for 13 years selling and training on pipe and cable locating and leak detection. he has trained hundreds of water departments across all of New England on both subjects. He has instructed at the Northeast Gas Association Training School for the last several years. He has also performed numerous locator training classes with gas and electric departments, and to locator companies. Mr. Berthod worked in production management for fifteen years with ten of that at Boeing Company in Long Beach, CA. He has an Associates Degree in Computer Networking from New England Technical Institute in Warwick, RI. Mr. Berthod was also honorably discharged after ten years active servie inteh U.S. Marine Corp.

Lisa Powers, Dig Safe Systems, Inc.
Ms. Powers began working at Dig Safe in 1989 as a Dig Safe customer service representative, and took calls there while erning her communications degree at Emerson College. After graduating, she found herself in the right place at the right time. The Dig Safe Board of Directors was looking to create a new Public Relations position, and Lisa stepped in immediately, since she was already familiar with the laws, as well as the organization's daily operations. Lisa is responsible for Dig Safe's public awareness campaign, educational material, website and newsletters, but her favorite part of the job is visiting companies and organizations to giv an overview of the Dig Safe program and its requirements. She can also be found at events and tradeshows promoting Dig Safe throughout Dig Safe's five New England states. Lisa has been an active member of Public Relations Society of America since 1999.
