An Overview to Line Locating, Leak Detection, and Dig Safe Rules & Regulations (#2021-36)

This 4-hour workshop is intended to serve as an overview covering all aspects of pipe locating, leak detection, and Dig Safe's rules and regulations. Below are the agendas for each section:


  • How pipe locators work
  • How to troubleshoot difficult locates
  • The reasons for multiple frequencies and when to use which
  • How to handle and avoid bleed off and distorted signals
  • Tools for plastic pipe locating
  • How GPR works and when it is/when it is not a viable tool


  • How to use sound to locate leaks in pipes
  • Alternatives to acoustic leak detection


  • Damage prevention laws and rules for both facility operators and excavators
  • Pre-marking techniques for proposed excavation sites and Dig Safe notification procedures
  • Methods for workingsafely around underground facilities
  • Safety protocol if an undergound facility is damaged
  • Enforcement and regulation process by the appropriate state agency(ies)
  • Potential hazards of utility damage and lessons learned
  • Gourp discussions, and Q&A

Class will be held Virtually on the Zoom platform. All participants will need access to a computer, tablet, or smartphone that has Zoom videoconferencing software installed, and a good internet connection. If you don’t yet have Zoom, you can sign up and download here.

Eric Denslow, Eastcom Associates
Mr. Denslow has been with Eastcom Associates for over 12 years and is responsible for the training and locator sales throughout New England. Eric has taught many classes for multiple Rural Water Associations, Water Works Associations, and also to the Gas Industry. Prior to joining Eastcom Associates, Eric was a Water Circuit Rider with the New Jersey Water Association for 2 years, and also spent 4 years at the Ocean Twp MUA in Ocean County, NJ.
Lisa Powers, Dig Safe Systems
Ms. Powers began working at Dig Safe in 1989 as a customer service representative, and took calls there while earing her communications degree at Emerson College. After her graduation, Lisa stepped into the newly created position of Public Relations for Dig Safe Systems. She is responsible for Dig Safe's public awareness campaign, educational material, website and newletters. Lisa has been an actie memeber of Public Relations Society of America since 1999.

Individuals registered for one of our training classes, seminars, and/or conferences will be charged the class fee if we have not received notice of canellation at least 48 hours prior to the beginning of class. Anyone contacting MassRWA to cancel enrollment in a training session will receive a cancellation number. In the event of an emergency, which would prevent attendance, please contact MassRWA as soon as possible with the details.
