Blueprint reading

This course will help water and wastewater operators improve their reading and understanding of construction documents. The content will include reviewing actual drawings used to construct a treatment facility. Attendees will become familiar with the design and construction of the civil, structural, architectural, process, mechanical, piping, building, plumbing systems, HVAC and electrical systems through the use of engineering graphics. There will also be a focus on how each discipline interacts with the others, followed by a Q & A period. In addition, participants are invited to bring any documents of their own for review. Led by MRWA’s Gretchen Tillson.

Data Collection Techniques (GPS and GIS)

One of the biggest challenges in managing a water or wastewater system is dealing with information about maintenance of the existing infrastructure and construction of new infrastructure. Simple data collection techniques and free/low-cost mapping software can be used to help staff understand infrastructure layout, maintenance requirements, upgrades and technical challenges. This information is especially important for capturing institutional knowledge gathered by long-time employees.

This class begins by discussing the use of simple Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment to collect data on system features such as valves, hydrants, manholes, etc. We will discuss options of inputting GPS data into multiple software options to enable paper map production, online maps and the creation of a Geographic Information System (GIS). The class ends with a discussion on developing and using a Geographic Information System (GIS) as a method of storing, analyzing, and managing data for numerous water system applications. Led by MRWA’s Bruce Young.
